A new Regional University Study Hub has opened in Kununurra, expanding access to tertiary education for students across Western Australia’s far north and strengthening the national network of regional learning centres.
The hub is part of the Australian Government’s ongoing rollout of Regional University Study Hubs, designed to support students living in remote and regional communities to undertake higher education without relocating. The Kununurra facility will provide dedicated study spaces, academic support, technology access and a local point of connection for students enrolled in universities across Australia.
Federal Education Minister Mr Jason Clare said the new hub would help remove barriers faced by regional students, including distance, cost and limited access to learning infrastructure. He noted that students in remote areas are significantly less likely to attend university, and that expanding the hub network is a key strategy in improving equity and participation.
Local leaders have welcomed the investment, highlighting the importance of creating pathways for young people to pursue higher education while remaining connected to Country, family and community. The hub is expected to support school‑leavers, mature‑age students and those balancing study with work in the region’s agriculture, tourism and community services sectors.
The Kununurra opening brings the total number of Regional University Study Hubs nationwide to more than 40, with additional sites scheduled to open later this year. The government says early data shows the hubs are improving retention and completion rates for regional students, particularly those who are the first in their family to attend university.
