Northern Territory students have returned to the classroom for Term 3, 2026, with record low teacher vacancies as the government continues to deliver in its year of growth, certainty and security.
According to the government, the Northern Territory has reduced classroom teacher vacancies from 130 in January 2025 to 20 as of yesterday, Tuesday 14 July 2026.
Thirty new teachers have commenced in Northern Territory Government schools this week, with 16 from the Territory, 10 interstate and four from overseas.
Despite national challenges, particularly for schools in disadvantaged and specialist settings, the government said the Northern Territory has significantly reduced vacancies, demonstrating the effectiveness of its workforce strategies.
Minister for Education and Training, Jo Hersey, said the government will continue investing in strategies to keep and attract quality teachers across the Territory.
“Every student, in every classroom, in every school will have a teacher in front of them,” Minister Hersey said.
“While there is more to do, this is a strong indicator that our workforce strategies are delivering results.
“Teachers from all corners of Australia and the world are flocking to the Territory. Who can blame them? They’re the best paid teachers in the country, the professional development opportunities are endless, and our unique Territory lifestyle makes teaching here an attractive choice.”

Xiaomeng Ren, new Preschool Teacher at Ngukurr School, said: “I was exploring opportunities outside Victoria when I found out the NT Government was hiring early childhood teachers, so I applied.
“I’m really grateful for this opportunity to come and teach in the Northern Territory, and I’m looking forward to knowing the children and learning about them and their culture.”
