School leaders and curriculum teams across Australia now have access to a new suite of practical resources from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) designed to strengthen whole-school curriculum planning and support effective implementation of the Australian Curriculum.
Launched this week, the new Curriculum leadership resources provide school and curriculum leaders with evidence-informed guidance, planning tools and professional learning materials to help build teacher capability, improve collaboration and develop consistent approaches to curriculum design and delivery.
The resources were developed in response to extensive consultation with principals, educators, education jurisdictions and sector stakeholders, before being piloted in 34 schools across multiple Australian jurisdictions. According to ACARA, the trial ensured the materials are practical, adaptable and responsive to the diverse contexts of Australian schools.
The resource suite addresses eight key areas of curriculum planning and implementation:
- Building teacher capability
- Using the Australian Curriculum
- Sequencing learning
- Including all learners
- Aligning curriculum and assessment
- Planning for multi-age classes
- Engaging with the community
- Evaluating resources
To support implementation, schools can access a range of practical materials, including guiding questions for professional discussions, workshop resources for staff teams, planning and goal-setting templates, interactive reflection activities, research summaries, reading lists and examples of effective practice for multi-age planning.
The resources also include processes to help schools develop a whole-school approach to sequencing learning across year levels and learning areas.
ACARA Chief Executive Officer Mr Stephen Gniel said the new resources were designed to help school leaders embed collaborative approaches to curriculum implementation.
“ACARA is committed to providing practical resources that support high-quality teaching and learning. That’s why our new Curriculum leadership resources have been created to help school leaders foster collaborative approaches to curriculum planning in their implementation of the Australian Curriculum,” Mr Gniel said.
He said the resources were developed in partnership with primary and secondary educators from across Australia and are intended to be adapted to individual school contexts.
“These new resources provide guidance and tools that schools can adapt to their own context. They are designed to support professional conversations, strengthen whole-school approaches to curriculum planning and help teachers focus on delivering engaging learning experiences for their students.”
